SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the set of techniques used to position pages in search engine results such as Google. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the optimization that gets a brand cited in answers generated by Artificial Intelligence tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity. Both disciplines share the same technical foundation, but they diverge in how the result is delivered: SEO competes for clicks, GEO competes for citations.

Your organic traffic report may look perfectly stable while your competitor is already showing up as a recommendation inside ChatGPT. That loss never appears on any traditional dashboard, and that is exactly why it goes unnoticed in so many marketing operations.

In this guide, you will understand what separates SEO from GEO in practice, what still holds true and how to measure presence in both arenas.

What SEO is and what GEO is

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the set of techniques used to position pages in Google results and win clicks. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the optimization that gets your brand cited inside answers generated by AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity. In the first, you compete for a blue link. In the second, you compete for a mention within the answer itself.

SEO ranks pages for clicks

In classic SEO, the game has a visible scoreboard: your position on the results page. You optimize content, technical health and authority to climb the ranking, the person clicks and visits your site.

The currency is the click. And it still holds value, because Google remains where most purchase decisions begin.

GEO puts your brand inside the answer

In generative AI, there is often no list of links. There is a single answer, assembled in real time from the sources the model considers trustworthy.

What is GEO, in practice? It means working so your brand is among those sources: showing up in the recommendation when someone asks "what is the best tool for X" or "which companies do Y".

Here the currency changes. It stops being just the click and becomes the citation, with the user able to close the decision without ever visiting your site.

That is why a solid GEO strategy measures different things from traditional SEO. And that contrast is exactly what we will unpack now.

The 6 practical differences between SEO and GEO

If you take only one thing from this article, make it this list. It is the mental table I use to explain GEO strategy in board meetings.

  1. Unit of competition. In SEO you fight for a position in the ranking. In GEO you fight for a citation inside the answer the AI writes.
  1. Traffic source. On one side, the Google SERP. On the other, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google's own AI Overviews.
  1. Content format. SEO rewards the complete page, the one that answers everything and holds the reader. GEO rewards the extractable snippet: a direct definition, an objective list, a data point with a source the AI can lift.
  1. Authority. Backlinks remain the currency of SEO. In GEO, consensus carries the weight: your brand described consistently across the many sources models read, from Wikipedia to the press.
  1. Measurement. Position and clicks you track in Search Console. AI traffic you hunt down in GA4, filtering referrals such as chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai.
  1. Response time. SEO works in cycles of months. AI tools with real time search can reflect a change within days, while the base model only updates at retraining.

Keep these six points in mind. The next sections show why they coexist instead of compete.

Why GEO does not replace SEO

Every week someone asks me whether they can skip SEO and go straight to GEO. The short answer: no, because one feeds the other.

When ChatGPT or Perplexity need up to date information, they run a real time search and read the pages that are already indexed and well positioned. If your site does not show up in that search, the AI does not even know you exist. It will not cite a source it never found.

In practice, technical SEO has become a prerequisite for GEO. A fast site, indexable content, clean architecture, structured data: everything you were already doing for Google now also determines whether the AI can read, understand and recommend your brand. Anyone who truly understands what GEO is knows the foundation is the same.

And then there is the revenue side. Google still concentrates most commercial searches in Brazil. Abandoning SEO to bet everything on AI citations means giving up the channel that pays the bills today to compete in one that is still growing.

The right question was never "which of the two". It is how to run both with the same team and the same content.

Signs your strategy is stuck in old SEO

Maybe you already sense something has changed, but you have not named it yet. These are the symptoms I see most often in B2B company diagnostics. If you check two or more, the problem has a name: your operation optimizes only for the ranking and ignores the answer layer.

  1. Rankings go up, leads do not follow. Positions improve in the report, but the volume of opportunities for the sales team stays flat or drops. Part of the demand is being resolved inside the AI tools, before the click.
  1. Your brand disappears when you ask ChatGPT. Run the test now: ask "what are the best [your segment] companies in Brazil". If your competitor shows up and you do not, the AI learned the market without you.
  1. Content written only for the algorithm. Keyword bloated text, no proprietary data, no citable point of view. Google may tolerate it, but the AI has no reason to cite it.
  1. Reports with no AI traffic. If your agency has never shown you how many sessions arrive from ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini, nobody is measuring that front. And what is not measured is not contested.

Recognize the pattern? Then it is worth understanding what GEO is in depth before touching the operation. That is what we cover in the next section.

How to adapt your operation to compete in SEO and GEO at the same time

Hands typing on a keyboard at night, next to printed pages marked with highlighter and a blurred monitor in the background.

You do not need to double the team or the budget. You need to change three habits in the operation you already have. You can start in the next content sprint.

Rewrite content for extraction

AI extracts snippets, it does not lovingly read the entire text. So flip the logic: direct answer in the first paragraph, context afterward. Each H2 becomes a question your customer would ask, with a self contained definition right below it. Add structured data (FAQ, Organization, Article) so the machine understands who asserts what. If you are still unsure what to optimize first, what GEO is in practice starts right there.

Build entity authority off site

AI tools form consensus by cross referencing sources. Your brand needs to appear in the press, industry directories and third party content saying the same thing your site says. A consistent mention across five sources is worth more than ten new pages on your own blog.

Measure without guesswork

Create a segment in GA4 for referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com. Then monitor monthly whether the AI tools cite your brand in the commercial questions of your market. What does not make it into the report does not make it onto the board's agenda.

The first move to leave the ranking and enter the answer

Back at the beginning of this article, the discomfort was this: a beautiful position report, a pipeline moving slowly, and the feeling that the game changed without warning. Now you have the diagnosis. Your operation optimizes for one layer of search while your customer decides in another.

If you close this tab with only three things, take these:

  1. SEO and GEO compete for different prizes. One delivers the click, the other delivers the citation inside the AI's answer.
  2. One feeds the other. A poorly indexed page never becomes a source for ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity. Strong SEO is the ticket into GEO.
  3. Measurement changes. Ranking position still matters, but now you also track whether and how your brand appears in generated answers.

Tomorrow's step is simple. Take the five pages that generate the most leads today and run the test: ask ChatGPT and Perplexity what your customer would ask. Does your brand show up? If not, start by rewriting the first paragraph of each one as a direct answer. If you want to understand the concept more calmly before touching the operation, the guide on what GEO is goes deeper into that layer.

And if you prefer an outside perspective, Talk to an Expert and get a diagnosis of your scenario, with no strings attached, showing where your brand stands and where it should be in each layer.

On Google or in AI, whoever is the best answer wins. The rest is a channel detail.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between SEO and GEO?

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) optimizes pages to rank in Google results and win clicks. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) optimizes content and authority so your brand is cited inside answers generated by AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity. In SEO, the unit of competition is the ranking position. In GEO, it is the citation in the answer, often with no click involved.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. Generative AI tools run real time searches and read pages that are already indexed and well positioned. If your site disappears from Google, it also disappears from the repertoire that feeds the answers. In practice, SEO is the foundation and GEO is the layer on top. Companies that treat them as separate strategies end up paying twice for the same work.

How do I get my company to appear in ChatGPT answers?

Three fronts work together: content structured in answer format (direct definition in the first paragraph, H2 in question format), structured data in the code (Schema.org for organization, FAQ and article) and mentions in sources the AI tools consider trustworthy, such as the press, Wikipedia and leading industry sites. Third party citations carry as much weight as your own site.

How do I measure traffic and citations coming from AI?

In GA4, create a segment with referrers from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. That shows the traffic arriving by click. For citations without clicks, the path is active monitoring: asking the AI tools the queries relevant to your market and recording when your brand appears. The Netlinks App handles this monitoring across dozens of AI tools, with live reporting.

Does structured data help with GEO?

It helps a great deal. Schema.org for organization, product, FAQ and article works like a caption for the machine: it says who you are, what you sell and which question each page answers. AI tools that perform real time retrieval extract snippets, and content marked up with structured data is easier to extract accurately. It is technical SEO work that pays off twice over in the answer layer.

How long does it take to see results with GEO?

It depends on the starting point. If the site already has a solid SEO base, authority and indexed content, the first AI citations can appear within a few months, because part of the answers come from real time search. If the base is weak, the work starts with the foundation: indexing, content in answer format and building external mentions. There is no shortcut that skips that stage.

Do I need two agencies, one for SEO and one for GEO?

Splitting them makes no sense, because both disciplines use the same raw material: content, technical health and authority. What changes is the delivery format and the way you measure. The ideal setup is a single operation that produces content with both layers in mind at the same time and reports ranking, traffic and AI citations in the same dashboard. If you are still unsure about the diagnosis for your case, Talk to an Expert and request an analysis with no strings attached.
