01Overview

Website optimization

Website optimization is the work of making the site you already own readable, understandable and preferable: by Google, by the AI models answering questions, and by the person opening the page on a phone with a weak signal. It covers on-page, speed, Core Web Vitals, architecture, security and structured data, measured before and after.

This is not a redesign. In most projects the site looks the same to a visitor and starts producing two or three times more, because the right pages finally exist, load in under two seconds and tell the machine exactly what they are.

Netlinks has done this since 2017 across more than 200 companies, with the team that ran SEO for Méliuz, Globo.com, Rock Content and LWSA. In the SP Labor case, optimization took the homepage to a PageSpeed score of 97 on mobile and 99 on desktop, with 6,433 images compressed from 4.0 GB down to 1.4 GB.

02Definition

What website optimization means

Website optimization is the set of changes that turn an existing site into an acquisition asset. The work runs across five fronts that hold each other up:

  • On-page. Titles, headings, copy, internal links and images on every page aligned to one clear search intent.
  • Performance. The real time until the page becomes usable, measured in the field, on the device and network your visitors actually use, not only in the lab.
  • Architecture. How pages are organized, linked and how internal equity flows. It decides whether Google reads your catalog as a hierarchy or as a pile.
  • Security and stability. Certificates, current versions, protection against intrusion and uptime monitoring. A site that is down or infected loses rankings quickly and takes a long time to come back.
  • Semantics. Structured data that explains to the machine what lives on each page: product, service, article, company, question and answer.

Sequence matters. Publishing content on a slow, poorly linked, unmarked site is spending budget to feed a leaking funnel. That is why optimization starts with a diagnosis and ends with the before and after number on screen, deliverable by deliverable.

03On-page

On-page optimization, page by page

On-page is where most of the fast gain lives, and also where most sites repeat the same mistake: dozens of pages saying the same thing, competing with each other, and none of them answering the whole question.

Titles and meta descriptions

Rewritten with the keyword up front, length under control and a clear promise. This is the copy that wins the click after Google decides the position.

Heading hierarchy

One H1 per page carrying the main intent, with H2s and H3s covering variations and related questions. Visible, never hidden.

End of cannibalization

Pages fighting over the same term are merged, differentiated or redirected. One intent, one URL, every time.

Internal links with real anchors

Every page gives and receives contextual links with descriptive anchor text. That is what builds silos and distributes authority without depending on external links.

Images and media

Modern formats, correct dimensions, lazy loading below the fold and real alt text, written for someone using a screen reader.

Content that answers

A direct answer up front, depth after it, and a format models can quote. Full production sits in content marketing agency.

04Performance

Speed: what actually weighs

Almost every slow site is slow for the same four reasons, and none of them requires rebuilding the project. Images that are far too heavy, JavaScript that blocks rendering, a server that takes too long to return the first byte, and a stack of plugins repeating the same work on every visit.

We attack in that order, because that is the order of the payoff. Compression and modern image formats usually deliver most of the improvement in the first week. Then come script trimming, edge caching, the server review and, last, the work that requires code.

We measure in the field, with data from real visitors, not only in the lab. A site can score 90 in a test and still feel slow on a mobile network outside a major city. The report shows both numbers, and the target is agreed before the work starts.

  • Batch compression and conversion of images to modern formats
  • Trimming and deferring JavaScript and CSS that block the first paint
  • Edge caching and CDN, with rules per page type
  • Server review, runtime version and time to first byte
  • Controlled font loading, with no layout shift

05Core Web Vitals

The three metrics Google measures

Core Web Vitals are how Google summarizes your page experience in a few field numbers. They do not replace relevance, but they break ties, and in a competitive category the race is almost always tied.

MetricWhat it measuresTargetWhat usually breaks it
LCPTime until the largest visible element appearsUnder 2.5 secondsHeavy hero image, blocking font, slow server
INPHow fast the page responds to the first tap or clickUnder 200 millisecondsExcess JavaScript, third-party scripts, marketing trackers
CLSHow much the layout jumps while the page loadsUnder 0.1Images without declared dimensions, injected banners, swapped fonts
TTFBTime until the server returns the first byteUnder 800 millisecondsShared hosting, heavy database queries, no caching layer

06Security

Security: what takes an optimized site down

A compromised site loses in days what took months to earn. The pattern we see most often is spam page injection, usually gambling or pharmacy content, inside older installations: the visitor sees nothing, and Google indexes hundreds of strange URLs on your domain.

Optimization includes closing that door. Core, theme and plugin updates, removal of what is not used, revised passwords and permissions, a valid certificate, security headers in place and periodic index sweeps looking for pages that should not exist.

When the damage is already done, the work is cleanup and reindexing, as in the Nobre case. Ongoing maintenance, with uptime checks every five minutes, sits in website management.

  • Core, theme and plugin updates, tested before they ship
  • Security headers, valid certificate and forced HTTPS
  • Index sweeps for injected pages, with removal requests
  • Verified backups and a restore plan that has actually been tested
  • Uptime monitoring with alerts to the team

07Platforms

Website optimization on any platform

The diagnosis is the same. What changes is how the fix is applied on each technology, and that is where the experience of running hundreds of sites saves the rework.

WordPress and WooCommerce

Plugin audit, caching at the right level, a clean database, batch image work and hardened security. This is where most of the fast gain lives.

Shopify, VTEX and marketplaces

Indexed facets under control, canonicals for product variants, real category copy and product schema with correct price and availability.

Next.js and custom builds

Server rendering, per-route caching, images optimized at build time and Core Web Vitals measured in production. That is the base of web development.

Proprietary systems

When the CMS is in-house, we hand your engineers a finished specification and verify every item once it ships.

08Cadence

What happens in month one, two and three

Optimization starts dense and settles into a routine. The first quarter always looks like this:

  1. Month 1

    Diagnosis and fast wins

A full SEO audit, compressed images, caching configured, on-page rewritten for the heaviest pages and crawl errors closed.

  2. Month 2

    Architecture and semantics

Cannibalization resolved, silos and internal links redesigned, structured data marked up and validated across the site.

  3. Month 3

    Fine performance and content

JavaScript trimming, server tuning, Core Web Vitals inside target and the first new pages for the intents found in mapping.

  4. Every month

    Measure and correct

PageSpeed, rankings, traffic and AI citations in the App. What did not move the needle leaves next month's plan.

  5. Always

    Monitoring

Uptime every five minutes, broken schema alerts and a warning whenever an update drags speed back down.

  6. 90 days

    Executive review

The read with leadership: what we gained, what it cost and what enters the next quarter.

09Measurement

How you follow the optimization

Everything we produce appears in the Netlinks App in real time, without waiting for a month-end report. You see the number before the deliverable, the deliverable itself, and the number after:

  • PageSpeed and Core Web Vitals per page, field and lab, with history.
  • Rankings by keyword, with the movement since the contract began.
  • Organic traffic and conversions, tied to Search Console and your analytics.
  • AI citations: which models mention your brand, and for which questions.
  • Technical health: crawl errors, pages out of the index, broken schema and uptime.
  • Delivery queue: what is in production, what is waiting for your approval and what already shipped.

Speed effects show up the same day the fix goes live. Ranking effects usually take 30 to 60 days on long-tail pages and a quarter on head terms. The estimate comes out of the diagnosis, with volume and difficulty on the table, because a badly set expectation is what kills SEO projects in month four.

10The deliverable

What you receive

Finished work, approved by you in the App and shipped. Not a report that only describes the problem.

Diagnosis with a numeric target

Where the site stands today on speed, indexing and on-page, and which number we are going after in 90 days.

Rewritten on-page per URL

Titles, meta descriptions and headings ready to publish for the pages carrying the traffic and the revenue.

Performance fixes applied

Images, caching, scripts and server. Applied by us where we have access, specified where the team is yours.

Architecture and internal links

A new silo design, an internal linking plan and a resolution for the pages competing with each other.

Validated structured data

Markup across the site, tested in staging, with alerts when an update breaks the schema.

Continuous monitoring

Speed, uptime, security and rankings tracked 24 hours a day in the App, with Alfred on WhatsApp.

11How it works

From the audit to the page going live

The same path on every project, with an owner and a date on each step.

  1. 01

    Diagnostic conversation

One meeting to understand the business, the platform, the history of the site and the target. No commitment.

  2. 02

    Audit and baseline

A full crawl, field measurement and a record of the starting number for every metric.

  3. 03

    Impact-ranked plan

Every fix gets an estimated gain and effort. The order comes from that ratio, not from personal taste.

  4. 04

    Execution

We apply what sits in our scope and specify what depends on your team, with testing before anything ships.

  5. 05

    Verification

Every item is measured after it goes live. Anything that missed its predicted gain goes back on the table.

  6. 06

    Monthly routine

Continuous monitoring, new pages, content review and an executive read every quarter.

12Who leads

Who leads your project

The three of them own the process and manage the team on every account. No senior who shows up at kickoff and disappears: they sign off on the plan, review the work and talk to your team.

13Who it is for

Where this work pays off the most

A site with traffic and weak conversion

The audience exists; speed, page clarity and the conversion path do not. This is the fastest payback scenario.

E-commerce with a large catalog

Thousands of SKUs, heavy images and indexed filters. Optimization recovers crawl efficiency and load time at once.

A company that does not want a rebuild

The investment in a new site can wait. Optimization extracts what the current site still has to give and measures what that is worth.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is website optimization and what does it include?

It is the set of changes that make an existing site findable, understandable and preferable: rewritten on-page copy, Core Web Vitals inside target, redesigned architecture and internal links, closed security gaps and validated structured data. Everything measured before and after, deliverable by deliverable.

Do I need to rebuild the site to optimize it?

In most cases, no. Optimization works on the site you have. When the platform truly is the bottleneck, the diagnosis says so with the number that justifies the rebuild, and our web development practice takes it.

How fast does speed improve?

Image compression, caching and script trimming usually show effect the same day they ship. The full Core Web Vitals gain in field data takes a few weeks, because Google uses a rolling 28-day window of real user data.

Does website optimization improve Google rankings?

It does when the problem was there. On-page and architecture move rankings directly. Speed and stability act as tiebreakers: in an even race, the fast site wins. Both effects compound with content and authority.

Do you work with WordPress, Shopify and VTEX?

We work with all of them, plus WooCommerce, Next.js and proprietary systems. The diagnosis is the same; what changes is how the fix is applied on each platform.

Does optimization include security?

It does. Updates, headers, certificates, permissions, tested backups and index sweeps for injected pages. A compromised site loses rankings fast, and recovery costs more than prevention.

How do I follow what was done?

In the Netlinks App, in real time: the delivery queue, approval per item, PageSpeed by page, rankings, traffic, AI citations and uptime alerts, 24 hours a day, with support on WhatsApp.

How much does website optimization cost?

It depends on the number of pages, the platform and how much execution stays with Netlinks. The initial diagnosis carries no commitment, and pricing comes with the plan, with the estimated opportunity beside it.
